Chapter 15: Purushothama Yoga
Yoga with the Supreme Being
Part of the Bhagavad Geetha — Complete Commentary by Guruji M. Mohan Sundar
Lord Shree Krushna said, " The Supreme Being is the root of the entire creation which is symbolically represented by an inverted Peepul tree and the roots are hidden in the ethereal field. The stem of the inverted tree is represented by Lord Brahma, who is the creator, and the branches represents various aspects of creation and the Vedas themselves are represented by the leaves. And thus, goes the phenomena of creation. Thus, a seeker of knowledge understands ME through this principle of inverted Peepul Tree and will also understand the secret of Vedas too ".
Note: This phenomena makes us to understand that the creation has manifested from that unmanifested, formless, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, all pervading Supreme Being which is invisible by ITSELF. Here the roots of the creation is in the Supreme Being. The created world as an Inverted Tree (Peepul Tree) is sustained by the water of three traits and also divided as divine, human and animal beings. The human beings may fall into any of these categories depending upon their past Karma. The three traits stretch themselves to all the three planes of creation (Divine plane, Earth plane, Nether plane).
Note: As earlier said the people of Satva guna go to higher order after leaving their body for an unknown period depending upon the fruits of his good actions when he was on Earth. The people of Rajo Guna repeat their human lives again and again. The people of Tamo Guna descend to the lower planes of existence. Thus the three traits stretch themselves in permutation and combination to all the three planes depending upon the Souls Karma. The creation in the form of this inverted tree has to be contemplated as the form of Supreme Being HIMSELF. Therefore, this powerful tree has to be cut-off through the sword of detachment and the seeker has to further contemplate on this unknown, unseen, Supreme Being (roots of the tree ) who is the cause for this inverted tree aspect of creation, and fixing himself on THAT Supreme Being, the seeker should meditate upon HIM (Meditate on the nature of the Supreme Being).
Note: The entire creation is compared to an inverted tree, where the roots of the tree are hidden in the Aakaasha (ethereal plane) and the entire creation as the downward aspect of the tree. Thus, the creation is descending from the unseen roots that is the Supreme Being called Aadipurusha i.e., Lord Naaraayana. If the seeker, who is seeking the Supreme Being and never to return to births and deaths cycle, he should contemplate on the Supreme Being (represented by the roots), then the seeker must cut-off the tree meaning he should detach himself from attachments in the world and seek the unseen Supreme Being by cutting off the tree meaning as said earlier detaching himself from attachments and practising the Right Spiritual Practises like Meditation, Japa, Manana, Shravana, Archana etc., and thereby, capacitating himself to reach the Supreme Being. Those who have dissolved their feeling of greatness and any type of infatuation towards the world, and those who have won over the attractions of the world and whose minds are fixed in THAT Eternal Supreme Being and have eliminated all the desires completely including all the dualities, such seekers of knowledge will attain THAT Indestructible Supreme Being. The Supreme ABODE of the Supreme Being cannot be illuminated by the radiance of Sun, Moon or even Fire. And those who have attained the ABODE of the Supreme Being will realise this (Because HE is self-effulgent/Swayam Prakasha). Those who attain this Supreme Being will not return to the cycle of births and deaths. The Individual Consciousness in the body is a minute part of ME, which is eternal. And that part of ME in association with the nature attracts the mind and the senses of the body towards ME. Just as wind takes away the fragrance of sandal paste, similarly, the Jeevaathma (Individual Consciousness) takes away the mind and the finer layers of the senses (invisible finer karmic body) while leaving the body behind during death, and transmigrates into another body.
Note: Through the above stanza, Lord Krushna makes it very clear that, the Individual Consciousness leaves the body at the time of death, and it takes away the mind and the sub-conscious layers of the mind as a whole where the seed of hidden karma of innumerable births is present, and also takes away the finer layers of the five senses along with it and transmigrates into the new body and takes birth as new human being or animal. This also explains the carrying forward of traits, tendencies and instincts shown by a human child, where we find the prodigies, often expressing great talents carried forward from past life. Some children, whose memories remain intact will recall their past life, indicating re-birth is a fundamental aspect of Human existence. Past life instincts, traits, and tendencies are a continuum. The Jeevaathma (transmigrated Individual Consciousness) experiences through the new body's eyes, ears, skin, tongue, nose and mind the outer world. The wise people will be aware of this existence in the body and experiencing the outer world through the body and also while leaving the body (death), but the ignorant cannot understand this natural phenomena. Through Right Spiritual Practises people can realise the Individual Consciousness (Jeevaathma Jnana) stationed in the body. Those who have not purified their sub-conscious layers of the mind and who are ignorant cannot understand the existence of deeply seated Individual Consciousness, but experiences themselves as individuals only through their senses. The radiance in the Sun that enlivens the whole world, the radiance of the moon, and the radiance of the fire, are all that of MINE. I infuse MY SELF into the Earth and through MY yogic power I create all the living-beings and behold them on Earth. I as the cool radiance of moon enliven the medicinal plants. Notes: The Sanathanis have the habit of seeking forgiveness of the Earth each day before treading on it after getting up from the sleep by bowing down lÉqÉxiÉÑprÉÇ mÉÉSxmÉzÉïÇ ¤ÉqÉxuÉqÉå || ) because Earth is the anchor for all the living beings and it is divine in nature. Similarly when a new house is being built the owner first performs Bhumi Pooja (worshiping of the Earth) in order to avoid unpleasant happenings during the construction, therefore he seeks the blessing of the Earth. Similarly the Earth diggers worship the Earth before they start digging the Earth for any purposes. I , associating with the ingoing and outgoing breath, along with the fire in the stomach, I digest the food eaten by the entities. Notes: Therefore simple deep breathing practice (Pranayama) for minute is helpful in proper digestion process. I reside in every living being in finest form. I AM responsible for memory, knowledge and removal of doubts. I AM the essence of all the Vedas and I AM the knower of Vedas. I AM also the constructor of Vedantha. In this Universe there are two things, one that gets destroyed and another one will not get destroyed. All the bodies of the living-beings are subjected to destruction, but the Jeevaathmas (Individualised Consciousness) in them are indestructible. I AM the Supreme Being, who is different from the individual's body and his Consciousness. And thereby, I pervade not only in the living- beings, I AM the cause for the entire creation beholding it, supporting it, and I AM indestructible. I AM different from this destructible non-living world, and I AM even beyond the indestructible Jeevaathmas (Individual Souls). Therefore, I AM known both in this world as well as in Vedas, as Purushothama (meaning beyond the living and non-living creation, therefore I am the Supreme Cosmic Entity). Arjuna, if a person of knowledge becomes aware of MY Purushothama nature, then he understands that I AM that All-knowing, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient, All-Pervading Supreme Being, and he ever remains a dedicated devotee of ME. Arjuna, I have given you the most mysterious and sacred knowledge. Any person who understands these principles can become a man of knowledge and a person of realisation. HERE ENDS THE PURUSHOTHAMA YOGA.
